Transfer

The Designated Player striker for the Whitecaps Sergio Cordova will be departing Vancouver to go to Alanyaspor in the Turkish League. The Venezuelan would be transferred for a total of around $2 million which is around what the Whitecaps paid for him when he transferred over to the Whitecaps in the off-season, as the Caps gave Augsburg $2.1 million for Cordova initially. There is also some add-ons and a sell-on for the Whitecaps is agreed between the two teams.

Opened up DP slot

So the transfer of the Venezuelan striker, there will be 1 DP slot opened. Whatever the Whitecaps will do with that DP slot is unknown as there is a possibility for a current Whitecaps player Richie Laryea will possibly get that slot after this season and being brought permanently by the Whitecaps, or they can sign a new talented player in the off-season, to maybe add that final piece to a contending Vancouver Whitecaps roster. Also there has been a rumour going on that starting from next season MLS will expand to 4 DP slots, so that would be 2 possible new DP signings. Also they can sign a free agent, as the Roster Freeze in Major League Soccer is on Friday, so until then they can make a free agent signing, and I heard that Junior Hoilett has been strongly rumoured.

Depth

I believe that a deal is going to happen before the Roster Freeze where you aren't allowed to sign players in free agency anymore, but if it doesn't will the depth after the departure of Cordova be good for the Whitecaps? There will be 2 strikers for the Whitecaps here, with Brian White and Simon Becher, also Vanni Sartini likes to play Gauld at striker, so with the preferred 3-1-4-2 by Vanni Sartini the two strikers but he usually plays Gauld and White as the strike partnership since he has used this formation, that will give more game time to Simon Becher as he has had 7 goals this season in all competitions but he hasn't scored any lately, as he doesn't get much gametime at all with the departure of Sergio Cordova that should increase quite a bit. But the depth of the Whitecaps shouldn't be harmed, as I believe if Vanni continues to implement and sharpen his tactics, Becher will continue to adapt as for the start of the season he was using the 4-3-2-1 when Becher was burying goals. So I don't think that the departure of Cordova will impact the team in terms of depth.
